the tuesday taknapotin television treatise
All this poker talk bores me and anyone who reads this blog regularly knew it wouldn’t last forever. as promised, it’s time for yet another issue of the tuesday taknapotin television treatise.
For those of you who aren’t exposed to it already, my buddy Cameron introduced me to SurfTheChannel.com a few months ago. The quality of the videos on there aren’t always great but it’s a good place to find that TV show that you’re looking for without having to download a huge torrent file that you’ll just delete once you watch it. Also, almost all of the shows I talk about here are available on STC and no spoilers for this current week’s episodes are included in any discussions below.
House: For a show repeatedly panned as increasingly formulaic and predictable, the past two episodes have been really good an and awesome step in the right direction. I think for too long the writers forgot that this show is about HOUSE, not medicine. The cases really ought to serve to highlight House, to allow us to see him through different perspectives, to see his interactions with people, to understand him more as a character, etc – NOT a focus on the cases with House as a side character. The past few weeks have done a very good job with this and it feels like a return to the glory days of House, if not even exceeding those in quality.
Heroes: No news here. I watch, I delete, I forget. It’s really uninspired and I don’t really know what to suggest to fix it. I don’t have any faith anymore that after so many failed restarts and resets that it will ever really attain any levels of quality again and may find itself one of the few once-good shows so currently terrible that it ends up shelved (would be the second one this season alongside Nip/Tuck)
: I don’t want to spoil anything but I’m pretty sure the show just jumped off the rails this week. You knew you-know-who showing up again was a guaranteed harbinger of terribleness to come. Unless some super magic happens next week 24 may very well have taken a step towards ruining a perfectly good season.
: God, so awesome. This is the only show I really enjoy week-to-week that’s currently on-air. Besides the Kate episode a few weeks ago (which are usually the worst of Lost), Lost has just gotten so good. At this point much of the audience is watching on faith that the writers bring things together in a believable, non silly fashion, but Lost has consistently proved to be deserving of our faith. A++ as usual. I’ve been told about Popular Mechanics’ weekly articles about some of the scientific stuff on Lost and they make for really good reading if you’re a fan of the show. This week’s is on the Egyptology and hieroglyphics in the temple.
Survivor: We’re down to one tribe now and let me see if I can name half the remaining players without looking. Sierra, Coach, JT, Brennan, Taj… that’s it. I can picture one more but I don’t know his name. 5/10 isn’t too bad, I guess. I don’t really think this season is anywhere as good as the last few (like the one where I met tommy ), which were admittedly insanely good for a show as old as this, but there’s a little ways to go where it could prove interesting. Also, on a side note, nobody is as good as Bob as making fake idols (still incredible). How do people keep buying this stuff?
Hell’s Kitchen: Definitely still pretty strong. I made a bet with Leo where we drafted contestants and I’m pretty happy with my picks, even though we’re probably very very close in terms of equity. I picked Danny, Robert, and Carol (bleh), and Leo picked Paula, Andrea, and Giovanni. At this point we’re “even” at Danny & Robert vs his Paula and Andrea, except for the fact that Andrea is drawing dead. Both Danny and Paula’s records are 5-5, sort of meaningless in this mostly-team competition, but both have recieved generally positive reviews from Chef Ramsey so I think it’s pretty even there. I think Robert has an outside chance to win whereas Andrea has just no shot at all, giving me a slight edge I think. I should have chosen Ben over Carol, but at the time of drafting I thought Ben was on the way out and had no idea he’d turn around as he did. Should Ben win, Leo and I chop.
Celebrity Apprentice: I haven’t really watched many seasons of this show, although I did watch the first Celebrity Apprentice and thought it was good enough to watch it again, especially with the inclusion of Annie Duke. It’s usually fairly entertaining and edited amusingly although I certainly don’t think it’s as good as HK or Survivor. They need to get more Dennis Rodman-level celebrities for next season and mix in more people like Joan Rivers (surprisingly awesome). All-in-all, fairly good for what it is. For their current task, I wish that when searching for “Annie’s poker nemesis” they had called Daniel. I bet he would have given them six figures to help beat Annie, haha. The last episode of this is on Hulu and is fairly worthwhile if you have some time to kill.
There are some shows off-air that I’ve recently finished that deserve an honorable mention for their awesomeness. I recently caught up to Damages, another awesome FX drama. I rate that show very highly and have gotten several other people hooked on it too. Battlestar Galactica finished a few weeks ago and I thought it ended very satisfyingly, barring a few points that most people already agree with (everyone just up and up agreeing with that huge civilization-shifting decision in the end was hilariously glossed over for such a major change). As I said in my last post, I randomly chose a new HBO drama to watch and ended up with True Blood, which I had full expectations of being terrible but actually I ended up liking a whole lot. There are very few shows where almost every person is interesting or engaging and I felt like TB did a very good job of making every scene and every character count. There are some awesome, awesome plotlines in S1 and I still can’t get the way Stephen Moyer utters the word “Sookie” (suh keh) out of my head.
Next up for me is Mad Men and I keep getting told to watch Burn Notice so that’s probably next on the queue.
